Oh yes, and Darwin wasn't the smart doggy in our http://evolutionofdarwin.blogspot.com/2011/11/10nov2011-smart.html" target=_blank>last post. No way... She'd never try that... she won't even push a door open with her nose.
And thanks for the input on the day care situation. I tried asking them about putting her in the other room with less dogs, but they said that area is for dogs being boarded and not for general day care use. They said they'd put really shy dogs in there or new dogs that aren't used to being at daycare, but "Darwin is a seasoned pro". I've tried looking for other daycares (the ones near us seem to all be very crowded) and entertaining the idea of a dog walker (though I have to admit I don't know how comfortable I am with giving a "stranger" a key to our place), but for now we're sticking with once a week daycare and playdates with her brother when possible.

{13sept2011: kites}

Kites are a great exercise tool for dogs! At least for Darwin and her BFF Friday they are.
A few weeks ago we met up with Robin and BB and Friday at Discovery Park for an early evening park session. BB brought his giant kite along and we had a fun time flying kites (we met a couple at the park who let us fly their smaller kite while they flew BB's bigger one) and entertaining the dogs.

Darwin's not a huge roll-in-something-stinky dog, but she found something good in the long grass. (photo edited for viewer's eye safety.)

The only thing with dogs chasing kites is the amount of barking they do. It was nonstop. And when BB got fancy and had the kite diving down, they got even more excited.




After a while we had to hold onto the dogs and make them rest. Their minds were saying "get that kite" while their bodies were saying "I can't keep going at this pace."

{25march2011: fun with Friday RESULTS!}

Thanks to everyone who took a guess in our Fun with Friday Contest.  After three weeks, the results are in!
Are you ready to find out what makes up this cutie patootie?!

They traced her all the way back to her great grandparents.

They even included pages with descriptions of the three main breeds: German Shepherd Dog,  Labrador Retriever, and German Shorthaired Pointer.

I was kind of disappointed that they couldn't break down the "mixed breed" side a bit more, but I was surprised about the German Shorthaired Pointer!

Sadly, no one guessed her mix exactly so we couldn't award a prize to a correct guesser.  Instead we threw all your names in and Darwin pulled a random winner!

And the winner is:  Mango!

{04march2011: fun with Friday}

We're having a contest!
It's called... guess what Friday is!
Robin has long wondered what the makeup of her girl Friday is so she and Bb finally took the plunge and are getting Friday's DNA tested.  They are using a company called Wisdom Panel and should be getting the results soon.  It's fascinating to go to their photo gallery and see what the results were for other doggies.
We thought it'd be fun to see what everyone out there thought what Friday's genetic background is made up of so we're turning it into a contest.  You can go to their Breed Library to see all the various breeds Friday could possibly be.  Prize(s) to be determined...

Some words from Friday's mom: "As Friday's mom, I'll give some background. Friday is about 65 pounds, and VERY mellow. She sheds a LOT-we use the infamous furminator on her...which works wonders. She has perfect teeth. I got her from the pound when she was one year old so I've never seen her as a pup."

I was going to fill you in on our trip, but there's so many other things to catch up on.  I'm a few weeks behind!

Before we went on vacation we celebrated Christmas with Darwin's bff at their houseboat.  Before dinner we did some gift exchanging.  Really the dogs couldn't wait to get into Darwin's gift from Friday.  Almost as soon as we walked in Darwin grabbed her gift and started to dig in.


She got rawhide bones which kept her busy most of the night.  But I think the best part of the git was the bag the bones came in.  It's a cheap brain toy for Darwin.  We've been putting cookies in the bag and she has to work to try and get it out.   
After dinner Bb showed of Robin's new toy and challenged Jason to a game of air hokey.  Friday made sure she supervised their shenanigans.

Both dogs (and all the people) were pretty pooped so we called it a night.

Darwin's felt brain game bag is surprisingly still in one piece so it's still testing her smarts!

{24dec2010: Bffs at the Park}

After Saturday's walk the girls were pretty mellow the rest of the day.  Sunday being Darwin's most favorite day of the week, the girls were eager to get out of the house and go to the park for the weekly Great Dane "convention".  

We ran into this big guy who was quick to check out both Darwin and Friday.

Then another blue girl showed up and a booty sniffing train formed.

We found the rest of the group and Friday introduced herself to the other Danes.

Darwin's Irish Wolfhound friend, Tessa, showed up and the two of them had a blast chasing eachother in the fields.

Winston showed up and wanted in on the Darwin play time action.

Meanwhile Friday was off to the side waiting patiently.

Darwin even got herded by a little Shepherd dog.

After we left the park we stopped at Target  real quick.  Darwin was in the back of the car, Friday was in the back seat. We ran in real quick, and I came back out while Jason paid and where did I find Friday?  In the front seat just hanging out.

When we got home both girls passed out and soon it was time for Friday to get picked up. It was cute and sad, once Friday left Darwin seemed so depressed that her bff was gone.  She was restless and kept going to the door.  We even heard that once Friday got home she wasn't acting like herself and seemed sad to not have Darwin around.  Poor girls.
